New this year

The Cloister Garden smells of roses and herbs.

The new Cloister Garden is inspired by the Monastery gardens of the Middle Ages where the Monks nurtured plants for both pleasure and purpose. This tradition is carried on in our own Cloister Garden.

You will find an abundance of roses. We have invested in over a hundred prize-winning rose varieties from the past 10 years. We also have herbs and other interesting and useful plants – tarragon, garlic, chervil, violets, etc. These plants were used by monks for cooking as well as medicinal purposes. Our herbs will be used to flavour the food in our restaurant.

A visit to Flor & Fjære starts off with a pleasant boat trip on the fjord, followed by a walking tour in the lush gardens  – and rounds off with an abundant buffet that makes your mouth water.

OUR 2011 SEASON OPENS 7 MAY TO 20 SEPTEMBER

We are open Monday to Saturday, closed on Sundays.

Departures with table reservations leave Skagenkaien at 12:00 for lunch and at 17:00 for dinner. Departures for special events and conferences are organized accordingly (generally at 11:00 or 13:00 for lunch or 18:00 or 19:00 for dinner).

All visits must be pre-booked by phone, e-mail or webbooking

Hidlefjorden

THERE IS A NO CANCELLATION FEE FOR RESTAURANT RESERVATIONS FOR LESS THAN 25 GUESTS

Cancellations are allowed up to 4 weeks prior to the reservation date. After this date there is a Nok 300 cancellation fee per guest for groups of 25 people or more. The number of guests can be amended by  a maximum of 10% up to 4 days before the event. Full price is charged after this date.

These terms also apply for all table reservations during ONS 2012.

Flor & Fjære is a non-smoking restaurant.


OUR RESTAURANT IS FULLY LICENSED

We have an interesting collection specially imported wines. Please feel free to ask for our wine list with wines from South Africa, France, Portugal and New Zealand.

Norwegian alcohol laws prohibits guests from bringing or consuming their own alcoholic beverages at Flor & Fjære or on board any of the boats to and fro. Wine and beer is only served to guests age 18 or older, and spirits are only served to guests age 20 or older.

Our guests depart from Skagenkaien in Stavanger on board MS Rygerfjord.
The boat trip is a 20 minute pleasant fiord experience.

Flor & Fjære is the perfect place when you want that something out of the ordinary. Unique is a big word, but there is actually no other place in the world like it! The whole experience takes 5 hours from the time you leave and return back to Skagenkaien. You can arrive on your own boat, but remember to make a reservation in advance.

From a windswept island to a palm tree garden in a couple of decades

It all started in 1965, when Åsmund and Else Marie Bryn bought the farmstead Mangela on the northern tip of Sør-Hidle and built themselves a small cottage.

The cabin that was built in 1965. That was when Mangela was barren and windswept.

Due to poor health, Åsmund was forced to move to Mangela for the fresh air and peace and quiet. As his health improved, he planted pine trees to provide a wind breaker for the property and started designing a small garden. The idea of Flor & Fjære was planted, and by 1995, Olav (Åsmund’s son) and his wife, Siri, opened the garden and restaurant to its first guests.
Now the 3rd generation, Olav’s oldest son, Endre, is being trained to take over, and the family continues to have new plans for the property.

The 2011 menu offers something for vision and taste alike!

This year, our Chef André Mulder, is particularly inspired by the French kitchen – pure and natural flavours from the freshest ingredients possible.

The menu is enhanced by herbs from our own Cloister Garden and presented as a delicate gourmet buffet. Good food should be accompanied by good drink. Our quest to find special plants and flowers, often brings us to places that specialize in wine production as well. This means that we are able to import often unknown but great-tasting wines directly to the restaurant.

Our meeting rooms now have updated audiovisual equipment to enhance meetings and seminars. The largest meeting room can take approximately 100 people. If you prefer an evening event, we can accommodate up to 300 dinner guests in our largest dining room.

We have 4 different function rooms. We call them Fjorden, Hagen, Naustet and Hytta

  • Fjorden (The Fiord) is in the main restaurant building and accommodates 135 guests
  • Hagen (The Garden) is also in the main building and accommodates 156 guests
  • We can open up between Fjorden and Hagen and have one dining room accommodating 300 guests
  • Naustet (the Boathouse) is down by the private picturesque harbour and accommodates up to 45 guests
  • Hytta (the Cabin) is to left of and above the main restaurant building. Up to 35 guests can enjoy the fiord vista from the private balcony

This year’s Flor & Fjære opens 7 May 2011. 50 000 flowers will be newly planted and ready for your visit. So will the restaurant with a fresh, new menu. Are you hungry for new impressions?

Olav Bryn designs the gardens and park year after year. He spends the winter season thinking up  and creating new combinations, finding new plants and flowers and looking for nuances not yet tested. The result is an explosion of colours, and when he is asked what his source of inspiration is, he answers quickly: “the rainbow”. Partly joking, but with a solid core of truth.
